Holi For All: Making Holi Inclusive

March 21, 20240

Holi is a beautiful time when our lives are full of colourful gulaal, sweets, music and joy. As we celebrate the festival of colours, let’s make sure it’s an enjoyful experiment for all children, including those with sensory issues! For children with special needs, Holi celebrations can be both exciting and challenging. Sensory sensitivities, mobility issues, communication barriers, and other challenges may require some adjustments to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

At My Whole Child, our therapists have come up some simple practices we can follow to make Holi inclusive and happy for all!

  1. Preparatory Activities: Introduce the concept of Holi through stories, videos, or sensory play activities to familiarize the child with the festival and its traditions. This helps children get used to the festivities of Holi.

  1. Sensory-Friendly Environment: Consider the sensory needs of the child and create a calm and comfortable environment. Use non-toxic and hypoallergenic colors, play soft music, and provide ear protection if the child is sensitive to loud noises. You can also use flowers instead of gulaal as well!

  1. Adapted Activities: Modify Holi activities to suit the child’s abilities and preferences. For example, instead of traditional water balloon fights, opt for water guns or spray bottles for a gentler experience. Use brushes or sponges for applying colors if the child is uncomfortable with direct contact.

  1. Respect Individual Choices: Respect the child’s preferences and comfort level. Some children may prefer to observe from a distance or participate in select activities. Honor their choices and provide alternative ways to engage in the celebration.

I would like to end by wishing everyone a happy Holi! Let’s work towards making this celebration fun for all. Let us celebrate not just with our hands, but with our hearts – reaching out to include all our children!
